The emergence of the new coronavirus variant shook global markets Friday, driving down stocks in Asia and Europe and hitting U.S. stock futures hard. Crude oil prices also dropped more than 6 percent. Dow Jones industrial average futures plunged more than 800 points, or about 2.3 percent, in early trading Friday, and S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures also fell severely. Indexes in Hong Kong, Japan, France and Germany all dropped more than 2 percent.
